Travel north-west past Bridgewater and onto New Norfolk. We cross the Derwent River and continue on to Rosegarland where we turn south-west and head along the Gordon River Road. We can enjoy a delightful morning tea and buy our lunch at the Possum Shed at Westerway or the Visitor Centre at Mt Field National Park.

We continue on to the Needles Car Park which is the highest point on the Gordon River Road at 651m, where the annual rainfall is 1.9m!

If the weather is good and we are feeling fit and healthy, we can complete the stimulating Needles walk (medium difficulty) that has amazing views to some of Tasmania’s highest peaks. If the weather is good, we can enjoy our lunch on the saddle (or if not, drive to the nearby picnic ground after the descent).

After descending back to the car park, we drive on to Scotts Peak Rd and the amazing and dripping wet, Creepy Crawly Walk, through horizontal trees. This is quite short but well worth the visit.

We then continue along Scotts Peak Road to the Edgar Dam campground and toilets where we may see some local wildlife. A further 10 minute drive sees us pass the Scotts Peak dam and on up to the lookout at Red Knoll, which is located only some 35 km from Port Davey, on Tasmania’s south west coast. Fantastic scenery and views across Lake Pedder are available on clear days.

We start the return journey passing some beautiful beaches and fishing areas on the shores of Lake Pedder.

Depending on time and weather we can visit Mt Field and have a short walk to the Falls and possibly the tall trees or continue on for a delightful afternoon tea at the Possum Shed, and possibly spot a platypus off the deck.

After a short refreshment stop, we return to Hobart in time for dinner.

Important Information

Southern 4WD Tour’s day trips depart from Hobart and return to the same pickup location/collection point.

Within several hours, passengers can experience world-class natural environments including spectacular coastal scenery and pristine alpine regions and still be back in time for a delightful dinner in Hobart.

Such locations usually require some travel on gravel roads, and your tour vehicle is ideally suited to this.

As we plan to carry a maximum of 4 customers, tours can be adjusted to cater for specific interests, wildlife and culinary delights as necessary.

All trips incorporate some outdoor walking which is generally quite easy. Customers should wear or bring appropriate outdoor clothing for Tasmania and be suitably healthy and fit to enjoy these walks.

The full daily tour fee is applicable whether there are 1, 2, 3 or 4 customers. If customers request a tour with less participants, this may be available for a reduced cost under certain conditions – however, requests for tours with less than 4 participants are approved only by special arrangement.
