The Tour:

This tour offers involves a scenic drive past rivers, farming countryside, bushland, then a ferry trip and coastlines and coastal forests culminating in a spectacular lookout at Fluted Cape, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Passengers may take their own packed lunch or are given the opportunity to buy good local cuisine in the form of a high-quality take-away lunch during a morning stop. Lunch-time is focused around specific destinations of interest (Grass Point/Fluted Cape), after an invigorating walk of around 75-90 minutes. A car-fridge is available to keep your lunch well-chilled, including any special drinks you may wish to bring.

Tour duration is about 10 to 11 hours in total depending on locations visited and weather.  Tasmania can experience inclement weather at any time but tours will proceed as planned unless roads are closed or there are exceptionally bad and dangerous weather conditions for driving.

Details:

Travel south past Kingston and a quick stop to purchase your fresh lunch for later, if you wish, then onto Kettering.  We may have a short wait for the next ferry departure before the 15-minute trip across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to Roberts Pt.  If you are feeling fit, you can make a rapid ascent up the steps to the scenic, Neck lookout.  After some more beautiful scenery, another 30 mins sees us at Adventure Bay, being careful of the local wildlife.  There is a modern, day shelter there to enjoy morning tea with toilet facilities.

South Bruny National Park.  We can then complete the challenging but spectacular Fluted Cape walk and enjoy lunch with a magnificent view (and possibly the wallabies), or take the less strenuous approach to Grass Point overlooking Penguin Island. (Bligh Museum at Adventure Bay is an interesting option for any non-walkers.) We can then relax during an hour’s drive through the tall trees and rainforest (Forest Reserve-Mt Mangana) to Cape Bruny and the impressive, windswept lighthouse overlooking the wild Southern Ocean. After a short walk we are back in the car for the return journey via Great Bay. If time permits, we can have a short stop for some wine and cheese (or artisan beer sampling), fresh oysters or local chocolate depending upon your preferences. After an interesting and delicious afternoon stop you can sit back, enjoy the sights and relax as we continue back to Hobart, via the ferry, in time for dinner.

What to Wear and Bring

Sturdy shoes or walking boots are highly recommended to keep your feet dry and ankles supported for our short walks but please ensure they are free of plant material and dirt before the trip.  A small daypack is also very useful to carry your lunch and drink, raincoat and warm clothes during our walks. We pass some beautiful beaches on this tour and you may bring bathers and a towel if you are interested in taking a short refreshing dip (usually only in summer), in the crystal clear (but cool) waters.

Important Information

Southern 4WD Tour’s day trips depart from Hobart and return to the same pickup location/collection point.

Within several hours, passengers can experience world-class natural environments including spectacular coastal scenery and pristine alpine regions and still be back in time for a delightful dinner in Hobart.

Such locations usually require some travel on gravel roads, and your tour vehicle is ideally suited to this.

As we plan to carry a maximum of 4 customers, tours can be adjusted to cater for specific interests, wildlife and culinary delights as necessary.

All trips incorporate some outdoor walking which is generally quite easy. Customers should wear or bring appropriate outdoor clothing for Tasmania and be suitably healthy and fit to enjoy these walks.

The full daily tour fee is applicable whether there are 1, 2, 3 or 4 customers. If customers request a tour with less participants, this may be available for a reduced cost under certain conditions – however, requests for tours with less than 4 participants are approved only by special arrangement.
